Osai Spotlight: Midnight Fastbird

Full Name: Midnight Orion Fastbird
Birthday: April 21, 1936
Nationality: Kiillaanian
Birth City: Wheatfield, Lost Islands
Bloodline: Sorela
Current City: Kesly, Lost Islands
Title: Caregiver

Fast Facts:
  • Midnight Fastbird is so far the only Osanokai to be from the unique hippie island, Isle Del Akai. Inhabitants of this island live a very down to earth life and only consume what they grow. He totally reflects this in appearance and name.
  • He is a first generation IDA native. His parents, Samuel Lawson and Jackie Sorela, settled on the island in 1930, changing their names to Orion Lawson Fastbird and Canyon Fastbird.
  • He is the middle child. He has an older brother, Twilight Fastbird (1932), and a younger sister, Moonbeam Fastbird Song (1937). All three of them remain on the island, and Twilight and Midnight work on the neighboring island of Kesly.
  • Midnight is 1/8 Catin from a pure blood Sorela and is mostly Kiillaanian. Since he is first generation he doesn't have a multi-racial pedigree that the inhabitants are famous for.
  • He grew up on the western face of the island and was an amazing surfer, winning several awards in his youth for his skills.
  • Like so many, the first clue that he was a Man of Osai was the fact that he did not sleep. He did not appear to have any ill effects whatsoever from his lack of sleep and boundless energy so his parents chose not to do anything about it, as he was fine.
  • He became somewhat famous for this and could often be found in Starry late into the night surfing the midnight waves. Because of this, his name Midnight took on a whole new meaning and he was known as "Midnight Waverider."
  • The next clue came when he discovered he had the power of insight and the ability to receive vision from Osai. It was nothing momentous but still a marvel and wonder nonetheless.
  • He was possibly the only person to be discovered by his strength. One day a small whale had beached itself and a group of people were trying to push it back to sea. Midnight simply walked over to it, rolled it gently onto a large blanket, and tugged it out to sea with his own two hands, as if it were nothing but a lawn chair. He was confused when the people on the beach had gathered around him with their jaws to the floor, astounded by his strength. Later that day there was a car that had gotten stuck in the sand and he pushed it back onto solid ground as if it were nothing at all.
  • Among the people on the beach was Wheatfield's Aikada and he witnessed this super strength. He called Midnight over and asked him if he knew what Osai Naori was. He said that he didn't but that it was oddly familiar to him. In that moment, Osai whispered to him that he was indeed a Man of Osai and he saw himself on the list of Men, just like Kaitano Kitala had years earlier. Midnight told the Aikada of this vision he had just received and he took him to his house where, after getting his parents over, he called forth the mark in his eyes. Midnight was astounded and in shock. He could not believe that all of his unique attributes were related and that there were other people like him. He was sent home with a new attitude on life and a borrowed book about Osai Naori, written by Lore Hieldin.
  • Midnight was wondering what to do when he grew up and a very strong flash of vision came to mind of him working with others. He realized that with his Sorela blood he was naturally a very kind and caring person and that he rather enjoyed helping others.
  • He got his first job working nights at a group home called Sunstar's House in Port Rose where he cared for very ill children. It was hard work but very rewarding and he knew he had found his calling in life.
  • He met his future wife, Golden Sunset, while working at Sunstar's House. She worked there because her brother lived there and she knew how sweet those children were. They were married in 1955 and had their first child, Sunday Fastbird Swifttide a year later in 1956.
  • Midnight went to Kesly Coastal University to become a certified nurse in 1956 and continued to work at Sunstar's House at night. He officially graduated from college with all of his required degrees in 1963 and began working full time as a doctor at Sunstar's House. He worked here until 1987 when he accepted a position at Summer Bridge, a bigger group home in Kesly. He has worked there ever since and is the assistant director, working nights and most days.
  • Even though his official Osanokai roster lists him as now living in Kesly, he still lives in Wheatfield. He has never moved from his first house that he bought when he moves out of his parents' house. He just spends the majority of his time in Kesly.
  • His wife still works at Sunstar's House and despite their very busy schedules they still find plenty of time to be together with their family.
  • They have adopted 5 terminally ill children over the years: Anissa (1965-1972), Starr (1965-1979), Gray (1972), Celeste (1970-1983), and Laken (1974-1999). Gray is still here, having defied all odds, and happily lives at Sunstar's House where he sees his family every day. They have fostered countless more and consider every child in their care their own.
  • Midnight is a very quiet man who does everything with purpose and love. He always takes the time to talk to his clients as if they were his own and is an expert at reading body language. He often receives information from Osai about the various people he cares for and is able to be even more in tune with their needs.
  • He does get some free time and enjoys going to the beach with his lovely wife. He also enjoys being with his daughter and extended family.
  • He travels on occasion and visits other Osanokai as often as he can.
  • His pair is the much younger Thomas Keery, although he and S. R. Sorela do things often together as well.
  • Being a Red Islander, he does indeed have the traditional ear piercing. Being from Wheatfield, he sports a gold ring in the middle of his right ear to this day. He got it on his 10th birthday and is very proud to be a native. His wife is from Port Rose and therefore has a diamond gem on the top of her right ear and a silver ring in the middle of her right ear.
  • He collects seashells and makes them into artwork to put in the rooms of the children he watches after.

A Short Description

It's Gray Fastbird's birthday today! He is turning 39! Even though he cannot speak, his eyes and smile speak volumes for him, and he knows full well that this beautiful January 10th day is his birthday. He is home in Wheatfield today to celebrate with his whole family. He'll have his party at Sunstar's House tomorrow. As his sister counts everyone off, her husband, their children, and grandchildren begin to sing. Twilight and Moonbeam are here as well, joining in the festivities. Midnight emerges from the next room, Gray in his arms. Midnight is a tall man, at about 6 feet, and is effortlessly carrying his helpless son, looking into his eyes with a twinkle of pure love. He too is singing, smiling as he does so, for Gray's joy is contagious.

He walks over to the oversized beanbag chair that has been prepared with blankets and pillows and sets Gray down on them. As they finish singing, Midnight begins the yearly tradition of reciting Gray's timeline. He begins with his birth in Falitonia, and how he was very sick and not expected to survive. However, he was a fighter and when he was 2 years old he got a 2nd chance at life when Osai showed his daddy his beautiful face and where he was. With that, a short time later, he would be a part of the Fastbird family and would join Sunday, Anissa, and Starr at home. As Midnight continues through his ups and downs he bends over and looked right at Gray. He talks to him out of pure love and holds his hands as he goes on until he reaches 39.

After the reminiscing and stories it is time to open some gifts. Midnight and Golden help him to open everything and take turns reading the cards and explaining to him what is going on around him. Gray, who was once thought to amount to nothing, is so obviously aware of what is going on around him and has a look of thankfulness in his eyes. With the conclusion of presents, Midnight climbs onto the beanbag with his son to watch a movie together.

He is a true caregiver and an amazing body of tireless service to others.
