Spotlight on: Maineco Djosevili

Full Name: Maineco Djosevili
Birthday: February 23, 1990
Method of Creation: #3- I wanted a blind girl with mounds of talent :-)

First off, let's get the pronunciation right. Ready? It's [MY-nuh-ko... jo-suh-VEE-lee.] Such a Lisjovalan name... As you can guess, Lisjovala is based off of Russia. She has no middle name and is the first one to do so. Lisjovalan girls don't have middle names. As long as we're learning to pronounce things, Lisjovala is pronounced one of three ways, with the one I use listed first. It can be lee-sho-VA-la, lease-jo-VA-la, or lease-yo-VA-la.

Anyway, I was sitting at church one day watching the speakers when I let my mind wander. I pictured a small but confident girl who had very small eyes that were hidden behind very thick glasses. She was obviously legally blind and had a talent for memorizing things. Somehow, she would end up being blind from a rare genetic birth defect. It later went on to affect the rest of her face too so she looks very different.

Her name came from a random word that popped into my head. I remember clearly sitting in my history class my senior year and the name Djosevili came into my head. I scrambled to write it down before I forgot it. Soon after that I drew (or tried to draw) a picture of this girl with small eyes. I thought that my new name would fit better as a last name so that's how she got it. I sort of made up her first name on the spot. She goes by Miney most of the time. Thanks to her, Lisjovala came to be. I had a few other people with last names similar to hers and I decided why not make another country. A race was born as well and coincidentally Miney looks the opposite of the race she's supposed to be, because of her genetic defect.

Maineco's genetic defect is on the "R" gene which controls body structures. The defects on this gene vary a lot more than the "H" defects which are all about the same thing. Hers is called "R-14" and it has affected her in the following ways:

Let's start at the top. First of all, her hair doesn't grow. It's like baby hair. It's very thin and sparse and falls out after only a couple inches. Miney has never had a haircut and has soft blonde hair. She isn't bald, she has just enough hair to cover her scalp. However it's not much past that. She wears a lot of hats :-). Next, her nose has no nasal bridge and is smaller than normal (especially for a Lisjovalan!!). Luckily, her glasses don't slide down her nose. Her mouth is very small too. She has normal-sized teeth which led to eight years of braces and the removal of 12 teeth to get everything to fit in there! When she smiles, she smiles up and not out, if that makes sense. Her face is rounder than normal and she is short, at 5'3'' (compare that to the average Lisjovalan lady height of about 5'10''). I've saved the most important for last: her eyes.

She has very interesting eyes. They are very small and are so widely spaced (because they are small) that she sees two separate images. It doesn't look as weird as you probably think it does. It looks like a person with really droopy eyes. Very hard for me to draw... Anyway, her irises lack pigment, giving them a milky blue color. They also have a very weird shape and do not react to light. In one eye her pupil looks huge and offset and in the other eye her pupil is in the shape of a cloud. Because they do not react to light she cannot see outdoors. It's too bright for the size of her eyes. She is partially colorblind- she sees red and blue in one eye and a few other colors in the other eye. She is missing many of the muscles in her eyes as well. She can only look up and down and cannot focus her eyes. Her vision is 20/5000 which basically means she can't even see a telephone pole. It's that blurred. She uses thick glasses and several magnifying tools to get things big enough that she can tell what it's supposed to be. She is able to read and even write. Most people with "R-14" can't see at all. Maineco is very lucky.

Not the best, but here's a pretty good idea of what she looks like.

So now you have a basic idea of what she looks like. Incredibly hard to draw. Anyone want to try for me? Now for her other trademark. Her best friend in the whole wide world is Celina Wheeler. What's so ironic about her last name? She's in a wheelchair, of course! She has a separate R-defect that causes muscles to totally relax. She has it in all of the muscles from her hips down to her toes, so she cannot walk. The two of them make quite the pair! I drew a really good picture of Celina in her wheelchair and Maineco with cane in hand walking home from school.

Anyways... I soon wanted this person to be a musician. I had been coming up with lots of clarinet and flute players but I only had one oboe-player so I decided that Maineco was an oboe-player. She learns her music by obtaining recordings of the pieces before rehearsal and listening to her part or having Celina or Svetlana (Miney's sister) talk her through her part while playing it on their flute or the piano. She is very good at memorizing things quickly and even memorizes rehearsal markings to make rehearsal easier. She is usually able to see the conductor well enough to get the time and has great judgment. Coincidentally she is dating the one oboe-player I had, who happens to be Malachi Kribana.

Maineco is very fun-loving and sweet. She loves music so much and it is her life. She and Celina are always together chatting or doing something. I would love to meet a pair like them.

Five Fun Facts:

1. Maineco is vegan. She is highly allergic to meat proteins and anything dairy. She can eat fish, though. Seafood is most of her diet. Dining out is difficult.
2. Maineco has Synthesia. When she hears a note she sees a color. She too has perfect pitch.
3. She does marching band! She plays the saxophone. She can see just enough to march.
4. She does yoga every morning with Celina. Both can touch their toes and beyond and are insanely flexible.
5. Her parents are from Lisjovala, so she's full-blooded Lisjovalan. It's a long ways away. That's like moving to Idaho from Chile or something like that...
