I've been thinking a lot about Thomas Keery lately. He's a Man of Osai, living pretty close to Jeffrey Peak, actually. I remember his name from my original list of the men which I lost and for a long time I had no idea who he was or what he did. I even pictured him as being kind of arrogant. Thankfully this all went out the window after I was doodling one day...
I had been experimenting with drawing techniques that would give me a deep dark eye without it being overpowering and looking like raccoon eyes or worse, girly eyes with eyeshadow. I finally mastered the art and began from scratch, drawing a little here and there, seeing what sort of person I could come up with. It's not often that I create someone entirely from scratch with no resemblance of anyone. I decided to try my hand at drawing a longer face and after several minutes of carefully sketching, erasing, and forming the face shape, eyes, nose, and smile, just adding things as I went along, Thomas Keery emerged.
He is pretty unique, even for a Man of Osai. He is often jokingly referred to as "the lightest of the men" because he does not have the characteristic shadowed, deep-set eyes that the rest do and his face is pretty bright, with no etched frown or furrowed brow. His personality, while still dark, is much lighter than the rest and he is less of one who ponders in the moonlight and more of one who could be found laughing with friends around a table after a long day of work. The arrogance I originally perceived was gone and suddenly a layer of deep caring emerged- he was a Sorela.
Thomas Landon Keery, the son of Lionel Keery and Alana King, is the 4th child out of 7. His older siblings are Daniel, Jessica, and Michael, and his younger siblings are Alvin, Joanne, and Mary. He was born on January 22, 1976, in Tovre, TS, and after several moves around the area ended up in Esero, RT, where he attended the majority of his schooling. He wasn't discovered until he was 9 years old, which is on the high side of average, but once his great gift was found he put it to very good use and began to show a great care for others. He attended college in Darkenshire, TS, and remains there to this day. He got married when he was 20 to Patricia Reslan and they currently have 13 children- 8 biological and 5 adopted.
Thomas contacted Midnight Fastbird and S. R. Sorela, the closest men in his area that he knew of, and they shared a special bond, all being of the Sorela line. From Midnight he became inspired to become a caregiver to the most broken and forgotten people of the world and from Dr. Sorela he learned great compassion for his work. In high school he began work at a care facility and became heavily involved in adoption programs. His early college work, with several others, led to opening the doors in 2000 for adoption in the small Catin-speaking country of Jangen. For 10 years (1995-2005) he worked for the Landon Foundation and traveled mostly to Taigana but eventually turned his efforts to Jangen and helped pave the way for international adoption there.
In late 2005 Thomas felt led by Osai to pursue a different sort of career. By that time Jangeni adoptions were in full operation and the leadership was established. He went back to school for training and in 2007 began work at the Southridge Care Facility in Darkenshire, a hospital for people who were stricken with the worst of the genetic mental and neurological illnesses- people who were broken beyond repair. These were people who had been stripped away to nothing and who were thrown out by their families. They were sent here to die alone and forgotten. Thomas quickly realized that although these people could not respond, they were still there and he treated them all with love and respect. He was able to calm the violent, nurse the sick, and give comfort to those who had felt none in years.
Thomas had a very early love of books. He could not get enough of them. He would often be up at night reading until his mom would yell at him to go to bed, not realizing that he needed no sleep. Finally, at the age of 9, after noticing that signature glow of his eyes in the moonlight, Thomas Keery was discovered to be a Man of Osai. After that his parents knew why he was always reading- because he could! They got him many books and he grew exponentially in knowledge and wisdom. He figured that since he couldn't talk to the patients at the care center he would just read to them, and so he spends many nights reading to those who could not sleep, hoping that maybe they were taking in what he said.
Thomas is now 34, almost 35. His love for people has changed the lives of many for the better. What a sweet soul he is and an amazing person. There will definitely be more to come. :)
