Restaru Migali, Musician

Fast Facts:
  • Restaru grew up in the south port city of Mutisu, a major port city to Iya Rani.
  • He is the son of Afranu Migali and Jeneiyl Kribana and has a younger brother, Kaitano Migali (1960), and two younger sisters- Kataya Mohola (1964) and Yanessa Sokar (1968).
  • Being a Migali, his family was very into gardening and he enjoyed farming.
  • Being a Kribana, he had a love for music at a young age and was very talented, learning the piano at 5 and then going on to learn the clarinet when he reached the age of 10. He and his brother were fascinated by reed instruments and with his gardening background Restaru felt more in touch with the natural, dark beauty that reed instruments had.
  • His parents lived on a large field and gardens about two miles from the coast and the young children were free to wander at night as long as they didn't go over the fence.
  • He would often take his clarinet and play into the trees or go to the ocean shore and play for the late night people that walked by when he was older.
  • He was discovered in 1964 after a series of events. One morning when he was 6 he told his parents that he had a dream that a man far away had something happen to him, and proceeded to describe the events surrounding the momentous event when S. R. Sorela obtained both gifts. It was on the news but they realized that at the time he described this, there was no way he would have known it, as the news hadn't broadcast it yet. Being from two pure lines, his parents had been educated about the history of their crests in school and realized that Restaru could very well be a Man of Osai. A couple days later during a storm the power went out and he effortlessly walked through the house, confused as to why his parents were not following him. They sat him down and asked him some questions and realized that he did not sleep more than maybe a few hours at night. Suddenly everything fell into place and they realized that he had Osai Naori after actually suspecting it for a long time. They then went to their city's Aikada who called forth the mark and confirmed him. He became the 12th current name on the list.
  • Knowing this, he traveled to Rihanu to meet some of the older Osanokai when he was 9. It was here that he got the distinct vision from Osai to become a musician and literally saw himself in a certain concert hall with a reed instrument in his hands. He ran to his parents after the meeting and breathlessly told them that he wanted to play clarinet.
  • His younger brother also followed suit and picked up the clarinet right behind him, although he was more interested in how they were made.
  • All four Migali children were incredibly close and even though two now live in Kiillaana both pairs live closeby.
  • The two Migali boys were the best of friends and did everything together, and became famous for this. They both went on to play clarinet and both attended Rihanu University, majoring in Clarinet Performance. After that however their focuses differed and Restaru went on to a graduate program in Nialli while Kaitano left RU to attend technical school in Tumira where he would learn how to make clarinets. Eventually Kaitano would be hired in the mid 1980's as an apprentice and eventual master in Kaywood, the home of the clarinet. The older of the two sisters, Kataya, would also settle in Ellsmatl.
  • Restaru received his PhD in clarinet performance in 1985 from the Nuoru Music Conservatory and became principal clarinet in the Niessa Symphony which he is still in today. He also became professor of clarinet at Niessa University.
  • Like all Osanokai, he was told who would become his wife long before he met her. In his case, he didn't meet her until he was 29 years old! He finally met her in 1986, a year after he started teaching at Niessa University. He recalled it was like Osai had given him a birthday gift of personality and beauty and whispered "She's the one!" Fiara Loch was a cellist who was in the Niessa Symphony for a few years and who was waiting for her perfect man. She remarked that Restaru Migali "was exactly who she had in her mind, down to the way he smiled and his unique eyes." They were married in 1987 and quickly became known as the "lover couple" in the music department.
  • They have two children- Anessa Migali (1990) and Sona Migali (1992).
  • Restaru regularly visits Kaywood/Ellsmatl to see his brother and sister and always performs in the programs hosted by the guild.
  • His nephew has Terabi Tana.
  • After learning from his brother, Restaru grows his own reeds.
  • His clarinet that he has had for 15 years was specially made for him by his brother.
  • He and his wife enjoy visiting the other Osanokai often and make several visits.
  • He loves the music of Yehai Sorela and has commissioned many pieces for both himself and the entire Niessa Symphony.
  • Every year he and Dr. Sorela get together and play a concert. Both have been featured by each others' orchestra.
  • He is in a woodwind quintet that is nationally known and travels all over Catarika performing in various concert halls.
  • He never fails to mention his family and his love for all of his siblings.

A Short Description

He appears on the stage, clarinet in hand. The audience this time is a large group of high school and college-aged musicians. His deep-set eyes are so dark they can easily be recognized from the very back of the Niessa Concert Hall. He is totally Catin, from his small but strong 5'8'' frame to his jet black hair that nicely accents his sharp features. He slowly walks to the microphone in the center of the stage and when he finally reaches it he looks out at the mass of people, smiles his trademark crooked smile, and says "Maha!!!!!!" Just the way he does it sends the crowd into laughter. For being very dark and serious he is quite funny and his personality has entertained many in his days. He pauses for a long time before suddenly picking up his clarinet and playing the first few bars of a solo that almost every Catin would recognize, especially if they were musicians. This also causes great laughter and whispers of "Ki sile hi! [I like him!]"

After a few moments he stops and then, as if nothing has happened, starts talking about the clarinet and goes into his introduction speech for the clinic he is giving. The whole time he is presenting it in a unique and amusing way and after a while, perfectly planned and executed, the other 4 members of the Niessa Sikai Tonaro [Nissa Quintet Woodwind] creep up onto the stage, get into formation around him, and as he pretends not to notice, uses a brilliant segue and without missing a beat takes a step back and begins playing a very popular Yehai Sorela piece completely flawless and totally from memory. This charm adds to his character and even though his dark features would seem to make him stand out, it instead suits him perfectly and it is so very clear that he is in his natural realm.

At the closing of the clinic, he ends with a very entertaining and popular story that he tells people all the time.

"My career as a musician and a lot of my life closely resembles my dear friend and fellow Osanokai, S. R. Sorela. I mean, we're both Osanokai first of all so we have that going for us. We're both musicians by trade so we can tell funny jokes and we actually laugh because we understand them and not because we're supposed to. Also, not only are we musicians but we are both reed-players! How many instruments are there and how is it that we, two Osanokai, two musicians, chose instruments that are so closely related! Now here's the real kicker. My middle name is Ravosilu. That's right, you now know my full name! It's Restaru Ravosilu Migali! Well, have you guessed yet what the R stands for in S. R. Sorela? Well, it also stands for Ravosilu! I think we're twins! Maybe Ravosilu is the secret name of musicians! Well anyway, all that aside, S. R. Sorela is one of my most beloved friends and I always enjoy our yearly visits every summer. He is an amazing oboe player and you should go hear him play when he is here next. If you're interested in other Osanokai he's got plenty to say about it so never hesitate to ask him. With that, goodbye and good night and I'll hopefully see you all tomorrow at our orchestra concert!"

Restaru Migali is so very funny and one who everyone knows about!
